" SHIBERGHAN , Afghanistan, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) -- Taliban militants overrun Kham Ab district in Afghanistan's northern Jawzjan province along the border with Turkmenistan on Monday, district governor Ahmad Khan said.

""Taliban militants overrun Kham Ab district in the wee hours of today and the district headquarters is in their control at the moment,"" Khan told Xinhua.

Without giving more details, the official said that the government forces had retreated.

Meantime, a spokesman for security forces in the province , Nasratullah Jamshidi, said that clash for the control of Kham Ab district has been continuing.

Taliban militants who have briefly captured some four districts in different provinces over the past couple of months are yet to make comments on the situation in Kham Ab district.

Bordering Turkmenistan, Kham Ab district's falling to the Taliban militants will enable the armed group to influence the neighboring Qarqin and Mangajek districts.

If Shanghai is a bustling city, Suzhou, a 20-minute high-speed rail trip from the metropolis, is the exact opposite. This laidback city is best known to tourists for its scenery.

Suzhou in Jiangsu province is often called Shanghai's backyard. This is because it was here that the groundwork for Shanghai's prosperity was laid.

The war between the Taiping Army rebels and Qing government soldiers in the late Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) drove many local wealthy people from Suzhou to Shanghai to set up shop there, says Gu Fengjuan , a senior tour guide in Suzhou.

"That provided the first signs of prosperity for Shanghai," says Gu.

"You can still see many businesses in Shanghai today that originally came from Suzhou, such as the Leiyunshang Pharmacy."

Suzhou is best known to tourists for its scenery, especially its classic gardens, which number more than 100. Roughly 60 are well preserved.

The gardens were built by scholars, wealthy people , government officials and business people in ancient times to spend their retirement.

Zhong Hanyi, deputy head of the Suzhou municipal tourism administration's tourism promotion department says: "Most people come to see our parks and ancient town and experience Taihu Lake."

More than 6.43 million visitors from home and abroad flocked to the area during the recent seven-day National Day holiday, down five percent year on year.

However, tourism spending increased eight percent to 7.3 billion yuan ($1.1 billion), says Zhong.

The latest figures represent a trend of tourists shifting from just sightseeing tours to more in-depth travel, she said.

The number of one-day visitors to parks and ancient towns dropped roughly 10 percent during the holiday , while local inns and camping sites along the Taihu Lake were packed.

The local government has worked hard on improving traditional park tours to improve the visitor experiences.

Early morning experience

The Zhuozheng Garden, also known as the Humble Administrator's Garden, now offers just 16 visitors the early morning experience between 6:30 and 7:30 am before it opens to the general public.

The garden, which is on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list, is one of the four most famous parks in China and is on a par with the local Lingering Garden, the Summer Palace in Beijing , and the Chengde Imperial Summer Resort in Hebei province.

Xia Wenting, deputy head of management and marketing department of Zhuozheng Garden says: "We launched the custom-made tour last April.

"Visitors can tour the garden during the two-hour period, so they can experience it like the owner would."

Watching the water mist wafting from the garden's lakes, breathing the early morning fresh air, listening to birds chirping and enjoying the manual tricycle service and a distinctive Suzhou-styled breakfast are among the perks of the tour.

Roughly 800 visitors have signed up for the special tour since it was launched, and most of them came during weekends , says Xia.

"Many of them (the visitors) are amateur photographers, high-end tourists with a strong interest in culture, or businessmen treating guests."

The garden covers an area of roughly 5.2 hectares and is the biggest classic garden in Suzhou.

Chu Jiaxi, a guide says: "It (the Zhuozheng garden) features a lake and three islands."

The eastern part of the garden features idyllic scenery, the central part is filled with many elements from the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), while the western part reflects things in the late Qing Dynasty , says Chu.

Visitors can appreciate peony in spring, autumn scenery featuring withered water lily in October and yellow maple and ginkgo leaves after November.

The garden was covered in green during our visit in early October. Long-stemmed water lily leaves stick out from the lake, and grey-tiled pavilions and corridors are hidden in the thick woods.

Those who long for a night view of the classic garden can opt for Wangshi Garden, also known as the Master-of-Nets Garden.
